Look at our reflections in the water
Making ripples, taking a drink
We used to come here when we were schoolboys
This ole water hole look like it's changed much to you?
Do you think the Lady of the Lake would even remember
The battles we staged for her favor?
Do you remember it got so dark and late
We had to start the games the next morning just to save her
Leave it all for the crack and whistle
Of the carnival train headed for town
Now there are children buying candy
Young girls talking all 'bout love & hate
Boys spin from the high ride
Old man coming home late
Outside the woodshed
Wondering what he's gonna say
Mom's been asleep listening to the short waves
Hanging onto magazines from far away
Look at our reflections in the mirror
Long and big and short and small
This funhouse gonna distort and shake
Worlds we might really never know at all
You think if we keep coming back
The carnival stay on the edge of town for keeps?
When everybody be happy, we all be laughing in the streets
No I couldn't conjure up a sadder sound
Than the crack and whistle headed for another town
Chickens don't know what bit 'em
The cousin of the little snake boy
The twins there look like spacemen
And the ponies look like toys
Peekin' underneath the sideshow tent
Like looking for monsters 'neath the bed
Junior's running home to mama
I heard he won't come back here this year again
The children line up for candy
Young girls whisper all about love & hate
And the boys tell glory stories
Jobs and school started late
Carnival's packed and gone
Ahead of the names and the fames and the names and the rains (?)
Mom and dad didn't go to bed last night
They were out there playing out by the lake
See everybody knows they're home
Everybody knows they're home
Everybody knows they're home
Everybody knows they're home
So sit back, and learn, and learn
Play a slide trombone
